What to carry into your next study session

  • Start with the chart title, edition date, location, and legend. Identify the boundary or symbol named in the question before applying a rule; colors and line styles have specific meanings that should be checked in the FAA Aeronautical Chart User’s Guide.
  • For a chart-based scenario, distinguish the airspace class and its vertical limits from nearby airport information, frequencies, terrain, and maximum elevation figures. Use the chart scale and location carefully; a familiar symbol alone does not establish the aircraft’s exact position or authorization status.
  • Under 14 CFR § 107.41, a Part 107 operation in controlled airspace requires prior FAA authorization. A sectional chart or UAS Facility Map is not itself an authorization; check the FAA’s authorization process and current restrictions before an actual flight.
  • Since October 26, 2026, the FAA says IRA and UAG tests include image-based questions not found in the test supplements, using current FAA chart imagery. That is a test-content change, not a sectional-chart edition date, and it does not disclose or predict actual test images or questions.
  • The Seattle training excerpts now use the FAA Sectional dated October 29, 2026, whose printed effective window runs from 0901Z October 29 through 0901Z December 24. As of October 15, the FAA lists the September 3 chart as current and October 29 as next, so the new edition is not yet effective. October 26 is the UAG image-question date, not a chart date. For flying, use the chart currently in effect and check operational sources such as NOTAMs, TFRs, and the applicable authorization.
